FITNESS STANDARDS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission approved a new 60-hour physical training course for the Law Enforcement Academy. These new courses are in addition to the current 80-hours Defensive Tactics course.

As a candidate for a DS, DST, or CADET, you will be required to complete:

  • 1.5 Mile Run: Complete a 1.5 mile run in 18 minutes or less
  • Push-ups: Complete at least 15 push-ups in one minute
  • Sit-ups: Complete at least 25 sit-ups in one minute

Preparation Instructions

  • Build up to running 3 miles a day, 4 times a week
  • One method to achieve this goal is to jog for 2 minutes then brisk walk for 1 minute and repeat for 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Work your way down to jogging for 3-5 minutes and walking for 45 seconds
  • Keep reducing the walk time until you aren’t walking anymore.
  • When the run is over, immediately drop down and do as many sit-ups as you can, until it is impossible to complete another repetition.
  • Take a 10 second break and then repeat twice more.
  • When you are finished with the sit-ups, immediately drop down and do as many push-ups as you can, until it is impossible to complete another repetition.
  • Take a 10 second break and then repeat twice more.
  • When you are finished with the push-ups, complete 5 squat jumps, jumping as high as you can every time.
  • Take a 10 second break and then repeat twice more.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT POSITIONS

  • At least 21 years of age
  • U.S. Citizen or Registered Alien
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence.
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
  • No illegal drug usage over the past year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
  • Driving History: Applicants applying for a position that includes driving an agency vehicle must possess a current and valid driver’s license. Applicants that reside outside the State of Florida, and will continue to do so, must have a current driver’s license for the state in which they reside (ß322.031(3), Florida Statute). In addition, no applicant applying for a position that includes driving an agency vehicle during the 60 months before the date of application will have:
    • Had their driver’s license suspended more than twice for nonpayment of insurance or for nonpayment of traffic fines.
    • Had their driver’s license suspended or revoked more than once for traffic violations except as stated above.
    • Been convicted of, or pled guilty or nolo contendere to, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a police officer, as defined in Chapter 316.1935 Florida Statutes.
    • Been convicted of, or pled guilty or nolo contendere to, “Driving Under the Influence as defined in Chapter 316.193, Florida Statutes, more than once.
    • Accumulated more than 12 points on their driver’s license during the 36 months prior to the date of applications or have a driving record that demonstrates repeated offenses and flagrant disregard for traffic laws.
